Data limits

Vehicle attributes come from NHTSA’s manufacturer-submitted vPIC data when you request a lookup. The result is not a vehicle history report, inspection, title check, ownership record, odometer verification or proof of authenticity. A check-digit match only indicates that the entered characters satisfy the U.S. check-digit calculation.

Recall campaign summaries may match a make, model and year rather than a specific VIN. For VIN-specific unrepaired recall information, use NHTSA’s recall search. Confirm important information with the vehicle manufacturer, relevant authority or a qualified professional before making a purchase or safety decision.

Availability and acceptable use

The site and external data services are offered as available. NHTSA may limit API traffic or change its services. Do not use automated scripts to overload this site or the public data services.
